What is Golfer's and Tennis Elbow?

Golfer's and Tennis Elbow are common terms for the inflammation off the forearm muscles where they attach to the elbow.

What are the Symptoms of Golfer's and Tennis Elbow?

Golfer's Elbow

  • Pain around the inside of the elbow
  • Weakness in elbow, forearm and wrist

Tennis Elbow

  • Pain around the outside of the elbow
  • Weakness in the elbow, forearm and wrist

What Causes Golfer's and Tennis Elbow?

Golfer's elbow is caused by repetitive overuse of the muscles on the outside of the forearm where they attach to the inside of the elbow. Activities such as golfing, pitching, swimming or certain occupations are often the cause of painful inflammation. Far more common is tennis elbow. Tennis elbow occurs when the muscles on the inside of the forearm become inflamed where they attach to the outside of the elbow. It is caused by repetitive overuse of the muscles from activities such as a backhand tennis swing, grasping, pulling weeds and hammering.

How is Golfer's/Tennis Elbow Treated?

The goals of therapy are to reduce your pain, eliminate the inflammation and restore the normal strength and flexibility of the muscle.

Rest -- The wrist or forearm may be placed in a splint to allow the muscles to rest.

Ice -- Apply ice to the elbow as directed to decrease inflammation.

Medication -- Your doctor may prescribe anti-inflammatory medication. Take as directed.

Physical Therapy -- A therapist will perform an evaluation to determine your individualized course of treatment. You will be taught a progression of exercises to help return the strength and flexibility of your elbow and wrist muscles.

What can I expect from physical therapy?

Your physical therapist is a hands-on specialist who will work with you to expand your range of motion, increase your strength, decrease your pain and achieve your therapy goals. Your therapy goals will be specifically designed to meet your individual needs are usually achieved through exercise programs, stretching, ultrasound, whirlpool and a variety of other treatments.
