Swing
Shift: Injury and the 'Weekend Golfer'
"Leisure golfers
attempt to swing with the speed and force of professional athletes,
but they have to remember that with each swing, seven to eight times
a golfers weight is directed into the spine," says Keith Kleven, PT,
ATC, owner of Keith Kleven Physical Therapy in Las Vegas, who has
trained some of the sport's most recognizable names. "With
this kind of force, it's easy to damage disks and strain muscles."
Weekend golfer's often complain of spinal-related injuries, such as
pain in the upper and lower back, shoulders, and neck.
Awareness of proper posture, fitness ad flexibility is just as
important for the occasional golfer as it is for the million dollar
athlete. Kleven recommends multiple core stabilization
exercises and Pilates programs to prevent injury an d improve
performance. Golfers of all ages and abilities should also
implement warm-up and stretching routines before teeing off.
Spend at least 20 minutes warming up and stretching major muscle
groups in the back and extremities. Finally, don't overlook
cardiovascular condition. Fatigue can lead to poor performance
and lack of coordination, which can set a golfer up for a serious
injury.
